Steps to Apply (After Preparation)
If you have not done so yet, Click Here to read our article on how to prepare before applying.
The initial process is to complete the online Initial Eligibility Questionnaire followed by the Intake Questionnaire on the official U.S. Embassy South Africa website.
This is the first screening step used to determine whether you may qualify for further processing.
Only use official U.S. government websites and official embassy communication.
Do not pay anyone to “speed up” your application or promise approval.
The U.S. Embassy has warned applicants about scams and has confirmed that the process itself is free.
The Steps
Step 1
Go to the Refugee Admissions Program for South Africans page on the official U.S. Embassy South Africa website:
https://za.usembassy.gov/refugee-admissions-program-for-south-africans/
Read the page carefully from start to finish before proceeding.
Step 2
On the Refugee Admissions Program for South Africans page, look for and click the link to open the:
U.S. Refugee Admissions Program Intake Questionnaire
Step 3
Read the entire page carefully before continuing.
Step 4
Near the bottom of the page, complete the Initial Eligibility Questionnaire and click Submit.
The main applicant for the household normally completes the form for their nuclear family.
Adult children aged 21 or older generally need to complete their own separate form.
Step 5
It is very important that you use an email address that you can access reliably, because future communication and login details may be sent there.
If you qualify for the next step, an email will be sent to you containing:
- A link to the Intake Questionnaire
- A password to access the form
- Instructions on how to continue
Check your:
- Inbox
- Spam folder
- Junk folder
- Promotions folder
... in case the email lands there.
Step 6
Click the form link in the email and use the password that was sent to you.
Step 7
Complete each page of the Intake Questionnaire carefully.
Important:
- Save your work often. The server or your internet connection could disconnect while you are busy.
- Bookmark the form link so that you can return later if needed.
- Take screenshots of completed pages for your records and to help refresh your memory later.
- Keep copies of important emails and information in a safe place.
If you stop before finishing the form, you can usually return later and continue where you left off.
Step 8 - If Your Intake Questionnaire Link Stops Working
If the form link no longer works after taking a break, you can normally request a new link and password.
To do this, go back to:
https://za.usembassy.gov/refugee-admissions-program-for-south-africans
- This opens the Intake Questionnaire page again
- Near the top of the page, click the option to request a new link
- Enter the same email address you used when you first applied
- A new link and password should then be emailed to you.
- Check your spam and junk folders if you do not see the email.
