Birth - What Are The Costs Of Unabridged Birth Certificates?
The South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) provides first-time newborn birth registrations entirely for free, while subsequent re-issues or specific certificate copies carry a small legal tariff.
When preparing your case file for the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), having the correct family documentation is crucial.
The U.S. government specifically requires an Unabridged Birth Certificate (UBC) for every applicant, as it lists the full details of both parents to firmly establish your family ties.
Here is an easy-to-understand breakdown of the official government fees for these documents at the date of writing this article:
Newborn Birth Registration & First Certificate: Free
There are no costs or government fees to register the birth of a child, provided you complete the application within the first 30 days of birth. The very first official certificate printed and issued to the parents after this registration is completely free of charge.

Abridged Birth, Marriage, or Death Certificate (Re-issue): R75
If you lose your original short-format document and need Home Affairs to print a replacement copy, the processing fee is R75. Please note that as of 2013, the DHA stopped issuing short-form abridged certificates for new births, moving entirely to the more detailed long-form standard to protect children.

Unabridged Birth Certificate (UBC): R75
If your child was born before March 2013 and only has an old abridged certificate, or if you need to request an extra copy of a long-form birth certificate for your immigration file, the standard government fee is R75. This document contains the full names, identification numbers, and nationalities of both parents, making it a mandatory requirement for the resettlement program.
